Downtown lit up at night under a long lenticular cloud, framed by dark trees

Desktop preview 0.1.0 · Free

Take the quiet with you.

Pick a name, share a link, and talk. Every message is sealed on your computer with post-quantum keys before it goes anywhere.

Choose your system Windows · macOS · Linux

A preview, not yet audited. Don’t trust it with anything you can’t afford to have read. The installers aren’t code-signed yet, so your system will warn you once; each system below says how to continue.

Every system, one account format.

The same core on each, the same keys, the same mailbox. A backup from one opens in any other.

Windows

Your system

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. No admin rights needed.

  1. Run the installer.
  2. SmartScreen warns about an unrecognized app because the installer isn’t signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Open Straylight from the Start menu.

macOS

Your system

Apple silicon (M1 or later), macOS 11 or newer. Intel Macs aren’t supported yet.

  1. Open the disk image and drag Straylight to Applications.
  2. Open it once; macOS blocks it because it isn’t notarized yet.
  3. In System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
  4. If macOS calls the app damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Straylight.app in Terminal and open it again.

Linux

Your system

64-bit, with a desktop keyring for your account key (GNOME Keyring or KWallet; most desktops have one).

  1. Debian or Ubuntu: sudo apt install ./Straylight-0.1.0-linux-amd64.deb
  2. Anything else: make the AppImage executable with chmod +x and run it. Ubuntu 22.04 and later may need libfuse2 first.

Browser

Any current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Nothing to install.

  1. Pick a name and a passphrase; you’ll type the passphrase each visit.
  2. Your account lives in that browser. Clearing its site data erases it, so save a backup and keep your recovery key.
  3. Handy, but the page is loaded fresh on every visit, so it’s only as safe as the site serving it. For anything sensitive, use a desktop app.
Open the web appstraylight.arok.ai

Then, a first message.

No phone number, no email, nothing to register. Your contacts know you by the name you pick.

  1. Keep your recovery key

Straylight shows it once. With it and a backup file you can move your account to a new computer; nobody, including AROK, can recover it for you.

  2. Share your invite

Click Invite and send the link. Their first message arrives as a request, and you choose whether to answer.

  3. Compare sixty digits

Open Verify and read the safety number aloud on a call or in person. If it matches, nobody is in the middle.

What the preview can’t do yet.

  • One computer per account. Restoring on another computer moves the account rather than copying it.
  • Text only. Groups, files, calls and notifications are on the roadmap.
  • Checks every 15 seconds. New messages arrive while the app is open, not instantly.
  • The mailbox sees your IP address. Never your name, your contacts, or a word you write.
Check your downloadSHA-256 checksums, until the installers are signed.
